New Information Governance Alliance (IGA) Guidance  (29/09/2015)

The IGA has published five short guides to informing and improving IG practice across health and care. Publication of the guides follows extensive consultation with IG subject matter experts and staff. The guides are:

  • Integrated Digital Care Records: Data Controller Issues - This short guide has been written to support the development of integrated digital care records (IDCRs).
  • The Health and Social Care (Safety and Quality) Act 2015: Duty to share information - This guidance note explains what this legislation requires and provides a clear message that subject to the preferences of the individuals concerned, sharing for the care of individuals is a requirement, not an option.
  • The Health and Social Care (Safety and Quality) Act 2015: Consistent Identifier - This guide sets out the requirement in the Health and Social Care (Safety and Quality) Act 2015 for health and adult social care organisations to use a consistent identifier (the NHS Number) for all data sharing associated with or facilitating care for an individual.
  • NHS Number: IG Requirements - This short guide has been prepared to help Information Governance managers in making local decisions on sharing the NHS Number. In particular it clarifies the rules on the use of the NHS Number by Local Authorities and adult social care providers.
  • Information Governance: Considerations for NHS Board Members - The ultimate responsibility for IG in the NHS rests with the Board of each organisation. This guidance sets out details about those responsibilities, and the questions that Board members should ask to assure themselves that information is effectively and appropriately used in their organisation. NOTE - this document supersedes the one published in August 2011.
